Douglas Lake - Trap Netting 2011

White, black, and black-nose crappie were sampled with trap nets in November of 2011. Trap nets were set from just above Nina Creek to Flat Creek. A total of 706 black, 139 white, and six black-nose crappie were collected in 90 trap net sets.

Approximately 65% of the black crappie collected were between 6 and 10-inches, indicating there was significant natural reproduction in 2010. Nearly 27% of the black crappie collected were less than 5-inches which indicated there was also significant natural reproduction in 2011. Eighty-three percent of the white crappie collected were less than 5-inches indicating good natural reproduction of that species as well.

Having two consecutive years of crappie reproduction on Douglas Reservoir is extremely good news. Good overall numbers of crappie collected, combined with the large numbers of young-of-the-year crappie, indicates that the Douglas crappie population recovering.
